LISTEN BELOW
In episode 2, I discussed how to budget and plan for your child’s camp fees, which can feel overwhelming depending on the camp you choose. If you haven’t listened to that episode yet, you might want to pause here and check it out, or catch up later—whatever works best for you! But today, we’re diving into why camps can be costly and what exactly is included in those fees.
Welcome to another episode of the Let’s Talk Camp audio series! This is episode 6, and in just two minutes (say that six times fast), I’ll shed a little light on a few things that are typically included in your child’s camp fees. Keep in mind, camp fees vary depending on the camp, so the specifics will differ, but here’s a general breakdown.
What Are You Paying For?
While the cost of camp can sometimes be intimidating, understanding what’s included in those fees can help make things clearer. Generally, camp fees cover a wide range of expenses to ensure your child has a fun, safe, and enriching experience. But what does that really mean?
Here’s a closer look at some of the key areas covered by camp fees:
Professionally Trained and Qualified Staff
When you pay for camp, you’re investing in a team of qualified, trained, and experienced professionals who have often spent decades perfecting their skills. These staff members are experts in engaging with campers, ensuring safety, and creating memorable experiences. While we as camp directors need to be fairly compensated for our time and effort, the true value of our dedication and expertise goes beyond what’s reflected in the fees.
High-Quality Resources
Let’s face it: inflation has hit everyone, including camps. Sourcing durable, high-quality resources and materials has become more expensive. At BimSmart PLAY, I always aim to get the best products that can withstand the inevitable wear and tear of camp life. But as you’ve likely noticed in stores, the quality and quantity of many products have declined while prices have gone up—this includes everything from arts and crafts supplies to sports equipment. These costs contribute to the overall camp fee.
Engaging Activities
While I love being hands-on with everything, sometimes camp directors have to outsource specialized activities. To provide a well-rounded experience, we may bring in professionals for swimming lessons, dance, gymnastics, cricket, football, and more. These extracurricular activities come at a cost, but they enhance the camp experience by offering children opportunities to explore new interests and develop new skills.
Location and Facilities
Depending on the number of campers and required camper-to-counselor ratios, camp leaders might need to rent larger or specialized facilities to ensure a safe and spacious environment. Having access to appropriate facilities helps campers move around comfortably and enjoy their activities to the fullest.
Sanitization and Cleanliness
Sanitization has always been a big part of camp operations—well before the onset of COVID-19. At BimSmart PLAY, we take cleaning seriously. During the camp day, we conduct frequent cleanings with environmentally friendly solutions to keep things safe as campers transition between activities. At the end of each day, a more rigorous cleaning is done to ensure campers return to a fresh, clean environment every day. This level of care and cleanliness is also factored into the camp fees.
What Else Might Be Included?
Depending on the camp, you may also find additional services that could be included in the base fees or available for an extra cost:
Meals and Snacks: Some camps provide meals and snacks throughout the day, ensuring your child is well-fed without you having to pack a lunch.
Extended Services: Camps may offer before and after care services for parents who need extra hours of coverage.
Transportation: Some camps offer transportation services to get your child to and from camp safely.
Why Do Camp Fees Seem So Expensive?
The next time you find yourself thinking, "Why are these camp fees so expensive?" remember that the cost includes a wide range of services and resources aimed at creating a meaningful, safe, and enriching experience for your child. From professional staff to specialized activities, spacious locations, and thorough sanitization, every aspect is designed to give your child the best camp experience possible.
